Pets in the Park

Perfect Day for Pets in the Park
Mother Nature provided a beautiful spring day for people to bring their pets to Waterfall Park in Independence on May 16. Several local organizations and businesses related to pet care and services had informational booths. A long line formed early for reduced priced rabies shots and micro-chipping.

Members of the Kiwanis Club sponsored one of the day's featured activites: the annual pet competition. Sandy Naylor helped the newbies learn the ropes in registering children and their pets, in the finer points of judging, and in keeping things on schedule. She was ably assisted by Ron Byers, Tawna Noftzger and her husband, Michael and Twyla Hahn, John Freytag, Diane Montgomery, Silvia Barrios, Gary Rohr, Don Coffman, Chyanne Lockhart Cardarella, Judy Luffman, the Truman Key Club faculty advisor, and one student.

Toby Cook, from the Royals, served as the MC while Lockhart Cardarella, Coffman and Mr. Noftzger judged which child and pet earned first, second and third place awards for several unusual categories, none of which were what you'd find at a Westminster Kennel Club competition! They included smallest pet (a beta fish), largest (a great Dane), longest tail, most unusual ( a crab), youngest, oldest, best trick and more!

The grand prize ribbon (think “Best in Show”) was awarded to a well-mannered dog and her pre-teen owner. The look of surprise on the girl's face when the award was announced was reward enough for all of the hard work during the day.
